Connecting to SharePoint 2013 via Visual Studio 2010

Dears,

I do have SharePoint 2013 installed in our server in addition to Visual Studio 2010.

I was trying to create a new project using Visual Studio 2010 and was unable to do so. it prompts me saying "A SharePoint server is not installed on this computer. A SharePoint server must be installed to work with SharePoint projects."

can i use Visual Studio 2010 professional edition to work with SharePoint 2013?
