An ugly error message when checking in a document

Hi,

I have a content type that has a mandatory field. When the user uploads a document, the document is added to the library and after that the user is presented with an Edit Properties form where s/he has an opportunity to provide a value for the mandatory field. It may happen that the user clicks Cancel instead of OK and an incomplete list item stays in the library (i.e., it does not have a value for the mandatory field). The item remains check out though and when the user tries to check it in, the following message is displayed by SharePoint:

I think everybody will agree that it looks ugly and may scare the user.

Is there any way to replace the above screen with a more friendly message? I have tried to use an ItemCheckingIn event receiver to redirect to a friendly error page but the above screen is displayed before SharePoint reaches my event receiver.

Thanks,

Leszek
