Creation of wesite layout in sharepoint 2013

I am beginner to sharepoint 2013.

I want to create my own custom web layout and use it.What are the ways and process should i follow.Pls help.

I am doint it with visual studio .by creating site columns,content types and layout.aspx page.but unless i deployed my solution,My custom content type is not displaying in listof existing content types .
