SharePoint 2013 - Client Side Script Using Script Web Part

Hello Community!

I'm working in SharePoint 2013 and I need to develop some client side script to retrieve items from a SP List and display them on a web part page.  The script needs to go in a script web part, and the display needs to include CSS and HTML.  Has anyone ever done this before and if so please provide guidance and code examples. (No alternate server side solutions please).
