Can I use Promises in Display Templates ?

Hi

Are there any reasons why promises would appear not to work with Display Templates ?

I trying to do a REST call and the processing just goes straight through the REST CALL (expected) and then through either a .done or .then (I have tried both).  The response comes along later by which time the page has been displayed.
