Best practices - create lists - abstract layer

 Hi,

      I am looking for the best way to create/manage sharepoint lists in VS. Is there any good practice such DAO (abstract layer) so model will be object oriented instead of retrieving and saving data straight into sharepoint lists. I thought about custom attributes and POCO classes? Is this good practice in sharepoint development process?
