Alerts based on Managed Metadata values (termstore)

Hi All, I have a requirement from a client to have users able to subscribe to alerts on a document library ONLY when a document has been added with ONE OR MORE managed metadata fields (termstore fields).

I'm struggling with this.

My thinking is that I could have a second list where users store an item with their name and the same managed metadata lookup. They select the values they want to receive alerts for.

Then I either use an event handler or a workflow to check the same fields in the document against every user record in the other list, find the matches and send alerts!!!

Has anyone done anything like this with the termstore fields? is this the right way to tackle it or is there a better way to get the same or similar result.

Hope to hear from anyone with any ideas or tips,,, all welcome.
