Simple 101 Question - How to write html at current location

HI

at the end I noted

"I tried

document.write(lastmodified); 

but this cleared the page and wrote the info on a new page, I guess there is another way of doing this.."

This was in a content edit web part, how do you write output locally, i.e. in the position of the web part ?
