Sharepoint 2010 Event Receiver

Hi

i want to create event receiver for item updating event for list item, for that i want to check new and old value of lookup field but when i used properties.AfterProperties["Job Status"] or properties.BeforeProperties["Job Status"] it will gives null value so how to retrive old value and updated value for for lookup field, for textfield its work fine.
